Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

Everything You Wanted to Know About Electric Scooter Accidents and Serious Concussions

Thinking about joining the electric scooter craze but concerned about electric scooter accidents and safety? Your concerns are valid: over 29,600 e-scooter riders wound up in the emergency room in 2019, almost double the number as in 2018.

And these injuries are not limited to scrapes and bruises. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that head injuries account for 45% of accident-related incidents involving e-scooters.

Concussions are Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)

Concussions—known as traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)—are the most common type of head injury. A concussion occurs when there is enough force to the head or the body to cause the brain to bounce around in the skull. While many mild concussions are not life-threatening, serious concussion injuries are dangerous.

Serious concussions occur when a person loses consciousness, even for a brief period. These injuries require prompt medical attention, including an MRI or CT scan to determine if there is any bleeding in the brain. Serious TBIs can lead to mental impairment or disability.

June 18 is Ride to Work Day

June 18, 2021 is Ride to Work Day, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This event is designed to raise awareness of electric scooter and motorcycle use and promote safety measures. Wearing a helmet is at the top of the list. Electric scooter riders are more likely to suffer from concussions and skull fractures, which could be prevented by wearing a helmet.

Navigating unfamiliar areas can contribute to electric scooter accidents. The choice of where to ride—road or sidewalk—also plays a role in e-scooter accidents. Electric scooter riders on roadways often suffer more serious injuries, but riding on sidewalks poses a greater risk of injury.

Ogborn Mihm encourages people to be safe on Ride to Work Day.
